CBT Training – TRAINING is the important word here
It is not a test!
I mention this because some people come in really stressed thinking I must get this right first time or I won’t pass. It’s really not like that at all, it is a fun day learning new skills, but you will have a head start if you have read the Highway Code.
You must have a valid provisional licence for the bike you are going to ride and you must be able read a standard number plate from at least 20.5 metres.
You will need to produce both parts of your licence on the day of your training – please don’t forget because you can’t train without it!
Come suitably dressed – we can loan jackets, gloves and helmets, but a sturdy pair of jeans and footwear that covers the ankles is recommended (not steel toecaps please!)
The new bikers café is next door to our modern classroom so a brew and a light bite is available. You can also admire the fantastic range of bikes at WIGAN YAMAHA which is across the road from our site. What more could you want from a training day!
Your CBT Lesson – What to expect
Very briefly the syllabus covers clothing, motorcycle controls, maintenance, starting, stopping, slow control, braking, left and right turns, and what to expect when riding on the road, followed by on road training.
The off road part of the course normally takes 3 to 4 hours (it may take longer if needed). It can, in some cases, take less – we only progress as fast as the slowest on the day but, we know that most [nearley all ] people will encourage eachother and work as a team irrispective of their riding standard
wherever possible, we will try to group riders with similar experience so that everyone feels comfortable. We train a maximum of 4 riders together on our CBT course.
The on road training lasts a minimum of 2 hours, but again may take longer. The on road part of the course covers all types of junctions, pedestrian crossings, different types of road and traffic situations, as well as U turns, emergency stops and hill starts.
At the end of the course you should feel comfortable riding out on the road, most people complete the CBT course in one day but it may take longer, we all have our own skills and abilities.
Once up to the required standard you will be issued with a CBT certificate – the certificate is valid for two years. If you are 16 you can ride a machine up to 50 cc, if you are 17 or over you can ride up to a 125 cc. However, you will need to keep the L plates on and you are not allowed to carry pillion passengers or use motorways.
If you are wondering what the required standard is the answer is simple,
Would we be happy to let you ride home on your own and still have a clear conscience?
If so you get a CBT certificate. You can renew the CBT before two the years are up if you have not passed your test by then.
Please note, most people will complete the CBT course in a day, but not everyone will have reached the required standard after a day and further CBT training may be needed. If further training is required a charge will be made.
If it happens that way its not the end of the world! Most people know themselves if they need and indeed want a little more time
We want you to be safe and want you to feel confident when you ride off .. with a smile (rather than eyes) as wide as saucers.
